THE COFFEE-HOUSE

IMG_9852One of the favorite forms of socializing was the meetings in restaurants and coffee-houses in the period between the two world wars. People attended these places in order to spend their time in a pleasant way. They were attended by both the intellectual elite and the common people, and in the same time, offered place to work for journalists, poets and other writers. The meetings of the intellectuals, artists, or men of culture in general, could generate political disputes or true “ad hoc literary debating societies”. The most popular places in the city of Satu Mare were: the Green tree Inn, the restaurant Europa (today Mioriţa), Hotel Dacia (former Pannonia), and Hotel Victoria. ST

THE HEALTH AND HYGIENE

IMG_9853Measures for the public hygiene and the individual sanitary education were included for the first time in the modernizing program of the Austrian authorities, applied during the 18th century. The importance of this domain is more obvious in the urban crowd. During the 19th century, Satu Mare faces the danger of epidemics, with its fast spread generated by the lack of the sewage system and of the source of drinking water. The prevention of the diseases was made with a proper sanitary education of the population, and by the opening of the public bath (situated in Grădina Romei, the former Kossuth Garden). The establishment of sanitary institutions (the Sanitary Office of Satu Mare County) and the increased supplying of sanitary staff contributed to the rising health statistics. DI
