Short overview
The scientific yearbook published by the Satu Mare County Museum, the journal Satu Mare. Studies and Communications, is among the first publications of its kind to appear in Transylvania.
The first issue of the journal was published in 1969, under the responsibility of Dr. Tiberiu Bader, the director of the institution at that time. The publication was later continued, through remarkable efforts, by the institution’s subsequent directors, such as Viorica Ursu Bilţ, Gheorghe Lazin and, last but not least, Prof. Dr. Doru Radosav, who led the Satu Mare Museum from 1977 to 1990.
The management’s attention to the institution’s yearbook continued after 1990 as well, under entirely different financial conditions, during the mandates of directors Ilie Sălceanu, Viorel Ciubotă, Felician Pop, and Liviu Marta.
Over time, the journal and the publications of the Satu Mare County Museum have featured prominent cultural personalities from both Romania and abroad—members of academies, university professors, and distinguished researchers—who have brought great honor to the journal and our institution. Among the notable names are: Pompiliu Teodor, Ioan-Aurel Pop, Doru Radosav, Ioniţă G. Andron, Carol Koracsonyi, Nae Antonescu, Sever Dumitraşcu, Ladislau Gyémánt, Nicolae Bocşan, Viorel Faur, Dumitru Şandru, Gavril Ardelean, Susana and Avram Andea, Vasile Vetişanu, Livia Bacâru, Toader Nicoară, Valeriu Florin Dobrinescu, Gheorghe Buzatu, Gheorghe Onişoru, Cornel Grad, Ioan Chindriş, Gheorghe Focşa, Ioan Stanciu, Marius Diaconescu, Vjaceslav Kotigorosko, Ignác Romsics, Péter Német, Sabin Luca, Béni Balogh, Dumitru Suciu, Stelian Mândruţ, Ottmar Traşcă, Vasile Ciobanu, and others.
Starting in 2004, due to the journal’s development and the increase in the number of articles, it was decided to divide it into several series: archaeology; history–ethnography–art; and natural sciences. These three series were published in separate volumes, each coordinated by specialists in the respective fields.
Today, after more than 50 years of active presence in the historiographical field, following the decision of the Board of Directors of the Satu Mare County Museum on January 9, 2024, the composition of the Editorial Board and the Scientific Board, as well as the new leadership of the Scientific Board of the journal Satu Mare. Studies and Communications, have been approved. Furthermore, it was decided that starting in 2024, the three journals published by the Satu Mare County Museum would be unified into a single format under the title Satu Mare. Studies and Communications, thus returning to the journal’s original structure.
